The musicians wear a series of costumes I designed with the artist Berke Goldberg. They take inspiration from the Covered Plaza (“Plaza Cubierta”) at the Central University, where artworks in the space function as a sort of preamble to the Aula Magna and Calder’s Acoustic Ceiling. Berke and I based the costumes on different murals in the plaza, such as those created by Victor Vasarely or Fernand Léger. I am generally very interested in the relationship between sculpture and painting, understanding it as the relationship between two- and three-dimensionality. We designed the costumes with the idea of incorporating the surroundings of the Aula into the performance, but there are a number that we produced that will not be used by the musicians, such as a second costume based on an alternate Léger work and a jacket based on a mural by Carlos González Bogen. All of them can be used as clothing, but they can also be opened and laid flat in order to function as stand-alone paintings.
